Fragility

Pom Mullan’s ceramic works exhibiting at XVA Gallery.

Curatorial Statement:

As she dived in the Red Sea off the shores of Egypt, Pom Mullan was stunned by the contrast of the rocky, barren land formations of the under-water realm. Being home to such delicate, unexpected and diverse shapes of plants and animals, it seemed only natural to name this series of works, “Sea Wonders.”

“Fragility” derives from Pom Mullan’s love for the extraordinary organic forms that grow under the sea surface. Being fascinated by curious and unique organic forms growing in the many coral reefs and their aquatic ecosystem, the artist strives to reflect and pay homage to these delicate landscapes. As we face a global threat with rising sea temperatures, results materialize as widespread bleaching of what should be vibrantly colorful, living coral scapes. Mullan’s intention is to draw attention to these immensely fragile life forms who play a crucial role in the survival of countless aquatic species and their habitat.
Having spent years experimenting with different clays and mixes, Pom Mullan finally settled on porcelain paper clay. Blending pure white porcelain with pureed soft bathroom tissue which allows for numerous experimental techniques. This versatile material can be rolled, pinched, sliced, sculpted and poured while in slip form. The works are then fired at 1260 degrees centigrade during which process the paper component burns away allowing for the clay to settle becoming pure white and semi-translucent.
